I also forgot to mention the refugee camp that was near our guest house in Mae Sot. It was very jail-like, and I found it extremely disturbing to see people caged in like that. From what people told us, when the Thai government catches illegal refugees, they send them to these camps (picture a smaller, jail-like version of the refugee camp in Blood Diamond). If the refugees can't pay their way out, they are eventually turned over to the Myanmar government. It's a generally depressing scenario, and again, totally different to actually see in person. And we thought US immigration policy was bad!
